When I first made the decision to homeschool I shared it with my mom’s group.  There were lots of things I was worried about including whether I could teach them well, how to handle the paperwork for the school district and what materials or curriculum I should use.   Their first response to my decision to homeschool heaped on one more worry I hadn’t yet considered….I was going to be with my kids all day, all the time, without so much as a break.  Gulp.  The thought hadn’t even crossed my mind yet.

Of course, I didn’t worry about that one long.  Now that I look back, it seems silly that I could have even thought for a moment, “Maybe they’re right.”  I have actually found the opposite effect to be true.

The more time I spend with the kids, the less I need a ‘break’ from them.  My theory is that when the kids go to school all day, they come home with lots of noise and energy that is in stark contrast to the peace and quiet that exists while they’re in school.  Adults who appreciate the quiet can therefore find the sudden onslaught of noise and energy somewhat difficult to deal with.  However, when the level of noise and energy remains at a constant level, there is no contrast.  If there is no quiet, there’s nothing to miss.  Indeed, after a short time of being with that noise and energy 24/7 I found I actually appreciated it all the more !

Reason #6: I love homeschooling because I get to be with my kids all day.

I agree totally – being with the kids all day long was one of the things I loved most about being a homeschooling parent. I couldn’t imagine putting them into a warehouse type situation six hours a day. Why would I want to be away from them that much? Being with the children was a treat for me and we got along just fine together that way, for years.

That’s great to hear, Linda. I’ve only been at this for a little over a year now so I’m glad to hear this isn’t just a temporary thing!
